Drag coefficient comparisons between observed and model simulated directional wave spectra under hurricane conditions

In this study, Donelan, M.A., Babanin, A.V., Young, I.R., Banner, M.L., 2006. J. Phys. Oceanogr. 36, 1672– 1688 source function is used to calculate drag coefficients from both the scanning radar altimeter (SRA) measured two dimensional wave spectra obtained during hurricane Ivan in 2004 and the WAVEWATCH III simulated wave spectra. The drag coefficients disagree between the SRA and model spect...

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Impact of the Reduced Drag Coefficient on Ocean Wave Modeling under Hurricane Conditions

Effects of new drag coefficient (Cd) parameterizations on WAVEWATCH III (WW3) model surface wave simulations are investigated. The new parameterizations are based on a coupled wind–wave model (CWW) and a wave tank experiment, and yields reduced Cd at high wind speeds. Numerical experiments for uniform winds and Hurricane Katrina (2005) indicate that the original Cd parameterization used in WW3 ...

Drag coefficient reduction at very high wind speeds

[1] The correct representation of the 10-m drag coefficient for momentum (K10) at extreme wind speeds is very important for modeling the development of tropical depressions and may also be relevant to the understanding of other intense marine meteorological phenomena. We present a unified boundary layer model for (K10), which takes account of both the wave field and spray production, and asympt...

A Physics-Based Parameterization of Air–Sea Momentum Flux at High Wind Speeds and Its Impact on Hurricane Intensity Predictions

A new bulk parameterization of the air–sea momentum flux at high wind speeds is proposed based on coupled wave–wind model simulations for 10 tropical cyclones that occurred in the Atlantic Ocean during 1998–2003. The new parameterization describes how the roughness length increases linearly with wind speed and the neutral drag coefficient tends to level off at high wind speeds. The proposed par...

Parameterization of Air-Sea Fluxes for High Wind Conditions

The standard model for dealing with turbulence and air-sea interactions has three components: (1) The ocean surface can be characterized by its temperature and aerodynamic roughness. (2) Given (1) we can use the wind speed and air temperature/humidity to determine the air sea fluxes. All relevant properties of the profiles of the mean and turbulent fields in the surface layer can them be comput...
